About Random Team Generator
Random Team Generator is a free browser-based tool. Split a list of names into random, balanced teams in one click.
Everything runs directly in your browser — nothing you type is uploaded, stored, or shared with anyone. The site is supported by display advertising so it can stay free to use.
Why we built it this way
Most "team picker" pages online are a single button and nothing else — no way to keep two people apart, no way to import a real roster, no export. We built this one after finding that gap: it started as a tool for splitting a classroom into project groups fairly, and grew constraint support ("keep siblings apart", "keep co-captains together") once it was clear that a genuinely random split isn't always what people actually need — sometimes fair also means respecting real-world constraints.
What makes the split actually fair
The shuffle uses the Fisher–Yates algorithm, the standard method for producing an unbiased random ordering — every name has an equal chance of ending up on any team. When constraints are added, the tool runs up to 400 randomized attempts internally and keeps the best one that satisfies every constraint, rather than forcing a result that quietly breaks a rule you set.
Maintained and improved
This isn't a one-and-done script we deployed and forgot. Features like CSV export, roster upload, list restore, and the constraint system were all added after launch based on real use cases people asked for. We keep an eye on how it's actually used and continue refining it.
