Paste your class list, set the rows and seats per row, add any pairs to separate, and print a new seating plan for the new term.
In a grid, “apart” means not in touching seats (beside, in front, behind or diagonal) and “together” means touching. At tables, apart means different tables and together means the same table.
A new seating plan in under a minute
This page opens on a grid of desks, five rows of six, with the front of the room at the top. Change the rows and seats per row to match your room, paste the register, and press the button. Each pupil gets a numbered seat such as 3-2 (row three, second seat from the left). If you have fewer pupils than seats, tick fill the front rows first so the empty desks are at the back instead of scattered through the room.
Separating and pairing pupils
Put two names on a line in the Keep apart box, separated by a slash, and they will not be beside, in front of, behind or diagonal to each other. The Keep together box does the opposite and puts two pupils in touching seats, which suits a support partner, a buddy for a new arrival, or two pupils with the same interpreter. Many classes only need a handful of rules, and the generator satisfies them in every test we run with typical class sizes. If your rules cannot all be met, the page says which one it broke.
Why change the plan regularly
A random rotation every few weeks stops fixed cliques, spreads quieter pupils across the room and saves you from deciding, again, who sits where. It also removes any hint of favouritism, since the shuffle is the same for everyone. Keep the plan you like, press Re-roll if you do not, and Print to put it on the wall or in the supply folder.
Pupil data
Everything is processed in your browser and nothing is uploaded. The page remembers your last list on that device so you can restore it next time; on a shared school computer, press Clear when you are done. Use first names or initials if you prefer not to type surnames.

- How do I make a random seating chart for my class?
- Paste the register, one name per line, keep the layout on rows of desks, set the rows and seats per row, and press Generate seating plan.
- How do I stop two pupils sitting next to each other?
- Add them to the Keep apart box as Name / Name. They will not be in touching seats, including diagonally.
- Can I put a pupil at the front?
- Not by name yet. Generate, then swap that pupil with someone in the front row by hand after copying the plan, or tick fill the front rows first and choose a size that fills the front.
- What if I have more pupils than desks?
- The page tells you the numbers and asks you to add rows or seats.
- Can I print it?
- Yes. Print gives a clean page with only the plan.
- Does it save my class list?
- Only on your own device, so it can be restored. Press Clear to remove it.
